You can make a hammock with 4 yards of rip stop and some strong rope. Gather the ends in about 1- 1/2 in pleats, fold them back about 6 inched and whip the end to stabilize it and make an attachment point. Now sewing and no commitment to the shape under test as all you need to do is unfasten the whipping. That technique lets one try gathering in different shapes without actually cutting them in. It lets one experiment endlessly with less than $50 worth of material. Maybe a lot less if one shops wisely. Play with that for a weekend and keep notes and you will quickly become an "expert". Especially true if you add an adjustable ridge line. Again, **Keep notes**. ;-) I also keep a relatively soft landing under my hammock. ;-))
