This place is awesome, I'm intrigued with the thought of hammock camping and after hanging around here I may have to try building my own. (don't own one yet)
But the real reason I'm here is I'm planning an AT thru hike ...is there any reason that I could not complete and reasonably enjoy hammock camping the entire length of the AT?
No reason at all.
The Smokies may require some creative thinking.
There are a couple of State Parks you'll go through that have some rules, but easy to hike through those areas.
The Whites can be interesting finding a good spot that is convenient.
Otherwise, there are gobs and gobs of great hanging spots all along the AT. The Whites will be the only difficult stretch, but there are places to hang.

You can certainly do the AT with just a hammock.
It's true that the Whites are the only long stretch above treeline. However, the AMC maintains huts up there like "Lake of the Clouds" hut that you could stay in.
