I just waited until my daughter couldn't her eyes open before i put her in the hammock. She'd sleep like a rock. IMO it's not the younger years that are the issue. Now that shes almost 7 she tosses and turns!

I've attempted a camping night with my nephew, before he got mouthpiece, and he grinded his teeth all night.
Never again. Mouthpiece = best 2 oz gear ever (at least for him)

That'S Great stuff. Lets us now how it turnsout.
On the carrier tip. My wife uses a hippie baby sling and loves it. It functions like an aarn by counterbalancing her pack weight.

We tried it with a two yr old. It really will depend one the child's personality and sleeping habits, and the mom's patience. A wiggle worm + tired-just want to sleep mom = bad night for both. Cuddly child + well-adjusted mom = happy camping. Now that everyone has their own hammocks, plus the youngest is now 4, everything is much better. Hanging tandem (side by side with two hammocks under one tarp) works well for us.

Good luck with it. Good call on making it easy to bail if things go south.

I see them a lot, never heard how well they work.
For little ones I'd reccomend a moby wrap. You'll lose any manly points you may have had, and you'll feel like you're learning origami. That said, it's like a hammock for a kiddo on your chest. I was able to wear my pack over the moby wrap with my son in it until he was about 20#. It worked great!

After that we used the kelty backpack carrier and had great results. I had my son in it fly fishing every weekend for about 4 months. He's 4 now and walks, and that is a nice change

+1 on the Kelty Kid Carrier. I used it many times when my daughter was smaller. She still rides in it occationally, but she is at the stage where she would rather walk....or be carried. We call it her "chariot"!
