Hammock stolen!!!

So here I sit in a motel in Grayling MI. I drove up today, 3.5 hrs, and headed over to Luzerne, a little east of here. I set up my tarp and hammock at Parmalee bridge state park, I was the only one there. I decided to drive into Luzerne to grab some dinner and when I got back my tarp was still there but my entire hammock rig was gone! Straps, UQ, bugnet and hammock. Fortunately I hadn't put my sleeping bag in yet. So I decided to just head home tomorrow. I had planned a three day solo paddle down the Au Sable, but I guess it was not meant to be. What a drag However a proper T-storm blew in when I got to the motel, so the good news is I missed that. So there's my tale of woe.

I'm so sorry to hear that. I live just south of that area in Cohoes. Please don't let the actions of one person from New York (if they were from NY) change your mind about NY. The Adirondacks are a beautiful part of the state.

Getting stuff stolen has always been in the back of my mind when setting up camp and heading to town. We've always been lucky nothing got bothered. I'm making some whoopies tomorrow. Shoot me your addy and I'll send ya a set.

I am sorry to hear of your misfortune as well. Don't give up on your trip though. Plan it for another time, and the next time go for an additional night to boot.
I will say that the concept of Stealth Camping appeals to me more and more as time goes by. I would never intentionally trespass on private property, but public land is PUBLIC LAND and is another story all together. I drank the Leave no trace Koolaid many years ago so my footprint is light.

Thanks Tom, I'm definitely planning on going back, I just won't leave my gear in an empty campground next time.

When I left the campground I took the little tag off the post in front of my site and wrote on the back that I didn't stay cuz my gear was stolen and put that in the payment tube. Well, yesterday the DNR called and said they had gotten my note and would try to refund my money since I did not actually spend the night. He was genuinely concerned, that will be a nice bonus if I get my site fee back. So, thumbs up to that guy.
