winter stakes???

hey all
with all the snow what do you all use as stakes in winter
especially for hard ground
went out for a quick hang the other day with the gf, to get her ready for winter hanging, but my stakes did not want to go in, we didn't have a lot of snow on the ground, and I buried my poles in snow to hold the tarp in place
for a quick afternoon it's ok but for a full night, it would have been a challenge to get them out
so what are you using???

For frozen ground I use MSR Ground hogs. Make longer grab loops also helps removal

I have used my small axe to help me pry them out in the morning.

For average snow I use these:



I just ordered 6each 18" long SST stake from Kifaru for the really deep stuff.

If you have to drive a stake into hard ground, you really have no choice but to use heavy steel stakes.

With snow, you have the right idea with the snow stake, but find a stick to bury. Also, remember to loop your line around the stick and tie it above the snow so that in the morning you can untie the knot and pull your line out without digging up the stick.

I've used landscape spikes in the 6"-8" range for frozen ground. Just don't pound them in all the way. You need to leave some sticking up so you can get them back out when you pack up.

I see you have some SMC's. I have used them both in snow and sand and they work well for both.

Here is a trick for easy entry of nail style stakes into hard ground. Boil water, put stake in water to warm stake. Pour water on desired stake location ground, immediately drive in stake. It works, and works well. However, make sure your stake has a sturdy loop on it so you can pull it out later. Sometimes pouring more boiling water on the ground is required to free stubborn stakes.

I use this kind of stakes during wintertime:



Since I live in Sweden it is (almost) allowed to cut down a few smaller birchtrees to make stakes out of them.
They work great in deep snow.

MSR Groundhogs: Hammer in, leave 1-2 inches above the ground. In the Morning hammer in an inch further (Breaks the grip of the ice), pull back out.
