Do you think some form of canvas tarp up wind of the fire might help this time?
I recall that you either had no heat upwind or got covered in sparks downwind.

I guess it would be difficult to keep a windbreaker tarp up if the winds are hitting 50 mph again though.

I spotted Poof a bit of insulation insurance at the second fishing hang.I just loaned you my IX pillow for the Horse Creek hang.

Depending on my passport stamps for the month of February, I should be a go.

    Very good Walter!

Well we know we can get to Carvers depending on when the snow plow comes through....so alternate is get the shuttle to Carvers Friday, hang there that night, Saturday hike to Overmountain and hang there, Sunday hike to the cars at the hostel...sound like a good alternate? AND the greater possibility of alpine conditions as we go over Hump.

So that's like 2 miles Friday, 6 Saturday and another 7 on the way out Sunday? That's no problem three season out of the year, but if the snow is deep, those kinds of miles can be pushing it. 1/2 mph is not uncommon if you're postholing through five feet of snow. The trek to 19E won't be fast either with ice on those rocks. A melting warm spell can be just as bad if the top layer turns to slush.

I'm not saying it is not doable, but that itinerary could turn on a dime if the conditions change.

I am willing to try this again. Last year was fun, even if I did have to bail early.
It could be that the purpose of my life is merely to serve as a warning to others.

Yeah Mr.D...let's just say your visit was shorter than any of us wanted. Glad to here your manning up for another assault.
At least we know the weekend...and that night #1 again at RHK.
Feb 11th is just after the full moon of the 10th...so night hiking into the shelter area might be cool HA!

The largest group hang of all time will be in the month prior in the Ocala NF....maybe this is the largest highest coldest group hang-we are all over Guiness

If we do end up hiking to Overmountain someone will have to wake me up?

Others? Cakes? WV? DetailMan? Roche? Spamburgler? NCPatrick? Hickory? Forgot Darby and who hauled all the wood last year? That was heroic!
You realize the more of us the warmer that little spot will be.

That is unrealistic if there is snow on the ground. The half mile of rock hopping to get off the highlands is scary enough in good weather.

However, snow on the ground will smooth out the narrow rut in the grass that they call a trail across the pasture above.

That's the catch. If the conditions don't afford an opportunity to make it off the bald, there's nowhere to hang.
