What I learned last year was at those temps ~if in a hammock sock~ then a tarp wasn't necessary at all {this after Mac's insistence I try}; but it really helps to get the hammock oriented straight into the wind. On top there really was no place safe from the wind except inside the shelter..which is where we'll eat again this year.

    Roan Highlands Feb 10-12, 2012

I'm up for it. Thing1 wants to come, too! She won't be happy just sitting on Roan High Knob all weekend, and she won't want to drive into town to eat brunch. (I didn't like that part last winter, either!)

    Here is a plan:

    • Friday park a couple of vans below Overmountain Shelter,
    • Park at Mountain Harbor on 19E and take shuttle to Carver's Gap,
    • Friday night camp at Roan High Knob Shelter,
    • Saturday hike 6m to Overmountain Shelter,
    • Sunday pile in vans and retrieve cars at Mountain Harbor.

    Alternate:

    • Park at Carver's Gap,
    • Friday night at Roan High Knob,
    • Sat hike 3m to Stan Murray Shelter,
    • Sun hike back to Carver's Gap.

    Whatcha t'ink?

Yes there was four diehards that did not go to the town brunch. Of course one slept all morning.

Or as Mayday and I did at Northern Tier...use a snowball. It's invigorating!

anymore brave hardy souls.....it's only a 6 mile hike in potentially alpine conditions of 40 mph winds, exposure, 3 foot snow pack, ice fields, hard to find blazes (under the snow or in whiteouts).....this isn't car camping, thats what the other hang is for HA!

Well if we do plan 1 that Mac suggests the second night will be a low elevation and probably quite balmy.

    Thumbs up Rhk 2011

Bob's Dairyland was a highlight for me last year. Always enjoy the people of RM and good food at Bob's.

Wisenber points out the potential challenge of getting to the overmountain parking area...just so everybody knows that anything that high up that time of year is subjective to bending.

Long time no see Bike Camper.
That hot breakfast at Bob's Dairyland sure did hit the spot last time! Beats trying to eat your oatmeal before it freezes any day!
