Good luck on your first. I haven't yet and working on my diy to get ready. Can't wait to hear about all the animals keeping you awake. Wait. That's just God's music.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you

Have fun, but remember you are going alone so make sure at least 2 different people know your route, schedual, and cell number. 10 miles is not a long way but if you are hurt it can be a long crawl.
Do I sound like a parent? Sorry.
My main motivation for solo hiking is that I don't have to depend on anyone. It can be hard to get two people to agree on a hike. So I just tell the folks who might be interested, "I'm going" and if they come, it's great. If not, I go anyway.

I agree with Veto that someone should know your route, and telling two people might have saved me on one occasion. Told my sister where I was going, but I always told her. She eventually started ignoring my "If I'm not back by Sunday at 6, call in the infantry" admonishments. I was stranded in a snowstorm in the mountains, constantly thinking my sister would have called in help for me since she knew where I was. She never did; never even noticed I was missing. Took a long time to get off that mountain and I wanted to beat her with a stick when I got down!

You will have a great time. Nothing like waking up in the backcountry alone. So invigorating.
