Wisconsin weather is notorious for sudden changes.

I remember last January when I was out for some solo hanging we had 4 straight days with -35 wind chill with 10 degrees down to -18 when sheltered. At the same time we tend to get a January thaw around this time too so it's a real hit or miss. It could even be in the 30's. I would like to be able to bring along a back up shelter tent of some sort but at the moment do not have something sufficient for a large group of people. I am open to suggestions. I do have a cabin in the next town over if weather conditions get severe.

Last week a neighbor gave me a large aluminum scout type pot that I think will be great for melting snow.

    Tips from the Shug

White gas stove for snow melting a must!!!!!! Count on 6 to 8 ounces of fuel a day in sub 0º .... more 8. Do not skimp here.

Be able to field strip and repair your stove .... bring repair parts.

    Know fire skills!!!!!!

Busy all the time with chores. Short days.

Booties or Mukluks are a treat.

Snowshoe hiking is hard with a pack or pulk on un-broken trail .... control your sweat. Sweat is bad!!!!!!!

    Don't think miles.......

Hot lunch .... you will be glad you did.

    Cigars make your fingers cold.

Candles are fun and can keep your boiled water warm longer.

You will sleep with a lot of gear .... cameras, water, batteries ......

A Mini-Atomic will boil your cup and half of water in -26º for breakfast from the hammock.

    Know fire skills!!!!!!

Extra gloves, socks and hat is not foolish!!!!!

Here is the video of that trip if you want to get pumped:

Crazy as I am, I am considering coming to the "Frozen Cheese" hang and then going on to the "Froze Butt" hang the following week.

CryOTheWild: Do you have a firm location for this? The Nicolet Nat forest covers a lot of area. Which parking lot, off what road are we talking?

    Or GPS coordinates

The parking area will on County W off of 52 just west of 32 near Wabeno. The parking area has a trail that leads to Eds lake. I will post a map soon.

Location Information for First Annual Frozen Cheese Hang

    Directions:
The trailhead is located on County Highway W midway between Crandon and Wabeno. Look for a large sign along the northeast side of the highway. Parking is available for 12 or more vehicles.

    Thanks for that.

I'm trying to round up some friends to go, but all these guys who wanted to try winter camping suddenly have lots of excuses. So it will probably just be me.

Yeah I have been having the same issue. Nonetheless I know we will have a great time. I'm looking for a decent sled for pulking but so far they are either too expensive or too flimsy. I found an Arteryx hip belt from REI marked down from $72.00 to $9.50 so now I just gotta get a sled, modify the sled to attach poles, modify the belt to attach shoulder straps and poles, modify a tarp to cover the gear in the sled, etc lol

What's the terrain like there? Flatland or Hilly? You might not need poles if this is flatland. For the Frozen Butt hang I just ran some rope through a military pack belt, then looped it through some holes in the Jet sled. If was hilly, I probably would have been rear ended by the sled, but since it was flat, it was an easy hike pulling the Jet.

This area is definitely not flat land. There will be good hills throughout. The trails should be relatively clear from fallen trees but they can be an obstacle.

OK, I'll upgrade my pulk setup to include poles.

It looks like Zombie Squad is doing a Winter gear test Jan 7-8 in Kankakee, then doing a "mock bug-out" Jan 21-22 or there abouts up in Kettle Moraine. So it looks like I have three camping trips planned in January! Whoooooo Buddy!

Oh, and I think I've decided on the Atlas 1030 Snowshoes. One step up from their basic snowshoes, and the design makes sense to me. I should probably lose 10-15lbs by January to fit within their weight limits...but whatever. I'm sure they'll work out fine if they will fit my NEO overboots.
