Permits Possibly Needed for N. Highland

Remember, unlike the Nicolet National Forest, the N. Highland is a State forest and camping is only allowed in established campsites or by special permit obtained through the ranger station. I get a permit every year to camp during the deer gun season from the Trout Lake DNR station. You can get a permit application faxed to you by calling the station, and send it back via fax, also. If done sufficiently ahead of time, the DNR will mail you the permit, otherwise somebody must stop at the station and pick it up in person.

They will want to know the reason for the permit (photography, nature study, etc. all qualify), the number of people in the group, where you will be camped, all vehicles in the group, including make, year, model, and license plate number.

    The permits are free.

One nice thing about the Nicolet National forest is that if you do need to get back to your car it will only be about a mile away. The parking area has a 10 dollar fee for parking but I should be able to get around that so parking will be free. As for NH SF I have only camped at Trout lake once while waiting for my students to arrive the next morning. I teach a canoe camping class out near Escanaba Lake or Lost Canoe lake. This would be a heck of hike but there are also trails that go around the lakes all-together. As far as accessibility and organization goes I think the Nicolet Forest is going to be the best choice for this hang. So far the poll agrees 3 to 0 vote Nicolet

    WI Winter Hang

Sure am gonna follow this thread.
Tentative if I could make it, but would like the Jan 13-15 option in NNF.
Question: Snowshoes or XC skis? Pulk or backpack? Winter means more essentials.

Can't confirm the date, but plans are in the works for the "2012 Frozen Butt".

The trails are easy to follow and fairly wide but they are also hilly and with rocks and likely to have fallen trees so snowshoes might be the way to go. I think pulking would be the easiest way to manage out there so if you have a sled more power to you I may get a sled together myself. I use mine for ice fishing but it's small enough it might work out. I will likely be out there from the 12-16 just because I have no other obligations at the time so if others want to stay a couple extra days (or more)I will be there.

Great to see you are starting a tradition in Wisconsin. I attended the Frozen butt hang in Minnesota last year and am also going this year. I was thinking about trying to get some frozen hang time in Wisconsin sometime in Feb. or March but closer to Madison. Maybe Black River State forest, etc. I really do like the Nicolet and spend time there in the Fall grouse hunting and opening fishing weekend in May. Don't think I can make it in January as it's to close the the Frozen Butt Hang. I only get so much time off for good behavior these days.

We only get five months of cold

Chances are when January comes around I may even start a thread for a second YES SECOND cold weather hang maybe for the start of March before things start to warm up. We only get about 5 months of cold weather up here so we have to make the most of it

The Frozen Cheese Hang is scheduled for the 13-15th of January but I may stay an extra day or 2 if anyone wants to stick around.

Wow, I'd sure like to keep up the Frozen Butt hang tradition, but this Frozen Cheese hang is 5 hours CLOSER than the Minnesota hang.

As awesome as the Frozen Butt hang was, saving 10 hours round trip would sure make this easier on me. And I'm not sure I can take TWO 3-day weekends off in one month.

I think I'm in on this, and I'll see if I can convince the fiance that this one would be fun to go to.

I know we were kind of spoiled at the first Frozen Butt hang, but are we going to have any sort of shelter at the Cheese hang? Will there be cheese and bacon!?!

What kind of temps would we expect in this region at that time of the year? Anything double digit negative?
