    Need advice for NC trip

Planning a hunting trip and I've narrowed it down to either the Linville Gorge Wilderness area or Pisgah Wilderness Area. We're trying to kayak/canoe in and I'm having a hard time finding rivers or streams that fit our bill. Anyone out there that can help me find one that fits the bill?

    Kayaking in to hunting grounds

It will be difficult to find a river to navigate if it runs through the higher mountains. Linville river doesn't even have whitewater kayakers on it.

The Green River Gamelands has whitewater kayakers, but it's rough and only certain parts are OK to paddle.

Check the Catawba or the French Broad and see if they run through any places you can hunt. Also the Little Tennessee is a nice paddle. Near Nantahala..

    Good luck, enjoy.

Actually there's quite a lot of white water kayaking on the Linville River in the gorge. Rather a popular place for some of the serious whitewater types. Check out www.americanwhitewater.org and search YouTube for a ton of videos on kayaking on the Linville River. Pretty amazing some of the runs they have established there.

But to kayak in? Nawh that's going to be tough. The Falls prevent that and that only leaves some serious hauling to get a boat in there. As far as hunting you'll need to check with the NC Department of Wildlife as far as the hunting regs and season in the gorge. Most people hunt outside of the gorge since hauling game out of those walls ... while not impossible is extreme to say the least. Then there's the fact that it is a wilderness area and is regulated on stay length, group size and the like.

    Huh.

I thought (and am probably wrong about it) that hunting was not permitted in wilderness areas. That's one of the reasons that Juniper Prairie Wilderness Area is so popular for hiking and camping in Ocala National Forest; hunting is forbidden there.

Well...I guess I was wrong. According to a five-second-long Google search, it varies by state. You learn something new every day, I guess...
