    New from Michigan

Hi all. I have not been camping for years. I do a lot of hiking but never plan any overnight trips. I have one friend that backpacks now and he is trying to get me and another friend to join him. It does sound like fun.

I am 51 years old and have a bad back. To top it off I'm 6' 1" and weigh 285 pounds. I can't imagine sleeping on the ground on one of those thin pads I see the backpackers use. I am a stomach and side sleeper mostly. I have read a ton on this forum and watched every youtube video I could find. The Shug videos are amazing by the way.

Anyway I am thinking about pulling the trigger on a Warbonnet Blackbird 1.7 oz double layer. I figure for $175 I can give it a try at home and see if it works for me.

it is good to meet everyone here and I hope this all works out so we can meet on the trail. Any suggestions/recommendations are appreciated.

welcome to the chatter....hope you enjoy your time.

i've got a buddy about your size using a 1.1 double layer with no problems if that helps. you would also shave a little weight off your pack which would help. i'm 6'3" 250 and have made several 1.1 double layers and had my 70 lbs shepherd in it with me and haven't had an issue but get what you think you'd be comfortable with.

Welcome aboard from another Michigander. I'm basically the same size and am using a 1.7dbl. Just used it this weekend actually. Served me well.

    Welcome to the forums.

Everyone seems to love the Blackbird and I hope to have one some day. I am a side and back sleeper. I have tried lying on my stomach in my Bridge hammock and it is comfortable. I think you would be hard pressed to lay on your stomach in any gathered end hammock. Im not saying to not get the blackbird. I would never say that. My first preference is for side sleeping anyway. I just wanted to throw another option out there for you that you may get a chance to try if you can make it to a group hang.
