after reading your description of construction i am wondering confused about hwere some material went. the shell is 4" bigger than the liner to account for 2" loft on each side but you cut your piece 10" bigger what are the other 6" for? do you use this for the drawcord tube?

Very nice Underquilt MAD777. I like it allot. Looks very much like what I am using from Adam & Jenny @Hammock Gear. Not slighting anyone in the least.
Not sure I would have the patience to tackle a project like this myself. Really nice work.
Thanks for sharing all the details as well.

Looking forward to seeing it later this month at "The Hang".

    Tim,

The other 6" is only at the head & foot ends and it is the total of the 3/4" difference in each of the 8 baffle chambers. The baffles run longitudinally and the baffle spacing is 5.25" next to hammock and 6" on the bottom.

Go into a JoAnn store and find one of the old ladies sitting near the sewing machines. They're almost always friendly, and will probably teach you a couple basics just for asking. Many hobby stores teach a class on sewing. You may be the only guy in there...but that may be good news for you depending on your situation...

Don't be afraid! I've been a long time member of BackpackingLight and a few years ago I got tired of seeing what everyone else was doing, so I went to Walmart and bought the cheapest machine they had. I figured I'd at least give it a try with a minimum investment. I had never sewn a lick before and didn't know anyone who sewed (including my wife). I just put some fabric in the machine and put the pedal to the carpet ... it didn't take too long to figure out what was going on. Well, the rest is history; I'm now a thread injecting fool, still using the same cheap machine.

OK, I finally got a chance to set up my hammock with this seriously winter quilt today .... weather conditions were sunny and 77 degrees! So much for winter testing, but I'm glad to report that it has a great fit, hugs the Blackbird nicely with no gaps and feels like sleeping on a cloud. Of course, I had to get out of it after two minutes before I had a heat stroke. Oops, sorry Shug, how's the weather?

Here are a couple of pictures of it on the hammock (yes, those are palm trees).
