    OK, I have made some progress.

    Raw materials:
    * 1" nom schedule 80 6061 aluminum
    * 1/2" nom schedule 40 6061 aluminum
    * 1/4" 6061 aluminum round bar
    * (2) 3/8" stainless hitch pins, retainer removed
    * (1) 1/4" stainless hitch pin, retainer removed
    * (2) 34mm ID rubber caps
    * some reflective line I had sitting around
    * JB Weld

    Everything fits inside the 1" tube, which I cut down to 18". The luggage grid sits at 42" when the bike is on the center stand, and the post gives me about a 2' height gain with 6" above that for a tarp attachment:

    It's pretty ugly because I'm working with hand tools and adhesives, but it should work. I might get the chance to test it later today.

    Love the tagline… the most I’ve done so far is taken a few hand files to it to remove the burrs. I was thinking this pole would be a great place to feature my hammock & moto sticker collection. It’ll also keep the aluminum from rubbing black marks on the inside of my tent pole bag, or whatever I end up lashing out to.

    I’ve got some Mothers laying around someplace, maybe I’ll try that first.

    The first test was a success! I parked the bike on the center stand within range of a tree and tried it out.

    I can't post photos because imgur.com is down! But... it worked. I promise.

    I'll post photos later.

    Nice! I would love to see the pictures when you can. That's a very cool thing.

    I did post a thread in the ADV (moto) forum here… but I’ll post pics in this thread as soon as I can.

    Well done. If the guy lines are fixed length how did you get it snugged down to start?

    That is great!
    So let me see if I got this right: compared to a setup with a Tensa solo, you have saved lots of pole weight (and bulk), way less guyline, no stakes needed (!), and still got all the same capabilities? I'd call that a huge win!
