    stretching temp ratings for UQ?

    Hi all,

I have a 15 degree UQ (recently purchased). I'm just curious to what extend I can extend the warmth on a cold night. We have some nights forecasted here into single digits. I do have a O degree TQ as well as an under quilt protector and plenty of warm clothes. I would test this out in my backyard before any trips, but if it's a fool's errand that would be great to know!

Most people prefer to have a buffer between the quilt rating and expected temps. That's not to say all people need the same amount of buffer, and different quilt manufacturers' similarly rated quilts will be constructed differently. But again, most prefer a buffer, which is to say they would use a 10° quilt comfortably down to around 20°, for example. It's pretty rare you hear of someone saying they comfortably used a single quilt well below its rating.

You have the UQP, which will help a little, though I wouldn't expect that to make up the difference between a 15° quilt and say a 5° night. In addition to the UQP, do what you can to block the wind - ideally a tarp with doors pitched fairly low so there's minimal gap between the ground and the lower edges of the tarp. If you have any kind of sleeping pad, thin sheet of closed-cell foam, or Reflectix to use to supplement your UQ, those things could definitely make a difference.

Give it a try at home, and bail if it doesn't seem like it's going to work. Practicing is the best way to learn your limits and the limits of your gear. It will show you the weak spots that need to be shored up.

    -16° here at the moment!

The most simple solution is to add a pad to your set-up. Could do the trick for you. Add to this be warm and fed when you crawl in for the night. Don't crawl in cold. Do jumping jacks or take a brisk little walk or run in place for a few minutes. Get the internal fire ramped up. TQs and UQs don't warm you..they capture and hold in the heat your body has and produces.
It will be a fun quest for you. Whooooo Buddy)))

Let us know how it works out. I'm in the Birmingham area and we're right on the edge of the winter storm warning-Meaning we may get snow, ice or nothing depending if it dips down far enough.
