Hey y’all! Anyone have updates about the Haven?

I’m finally, after having to cancel the trip 3 times, am taking off on a solo kayak circumnavigation of Lake Superior Spring ‘24. The concern was always not having a good combination of trees to hang from at some places so I was taking a tent as backup.

Being able to GtoG with this is seems an advantage over a hammock bivvy, the weight is close to my Blackbird, SuperFly, Klymit pad plus the 1P BA Copperspur tent. And the packed size, which is more of a concern for kayakers, is about the same as the tent and pad.

    Appreciate any new info,
    Cheers,
    B

My chief problem with the Haven isn't the comfort it's that I struggle to stay warm, even in the summer without some extra layers. I've never taken it to ground but I don't foresee that being a particular problem.
Circumnavigation of L. Superior sounds super cool tho'. Good luck and stay safe.
    Good luck,

    ‘Evening RED,

I had wondered about the warmth. Are you using their insulated pad? The extra cover they sell? Do you think an UQ could be hung underneath using the toggles on the hammock designed for their fly?

    cheers,
    B

I have the insulated pad, but not the overcover. I have found that in the summer a fleece blanket on top of the pad works, in the winter I put a reflectix pad under the haven pad like a 1.5" or 2" OPEN cell pad on top, that was actually quite warm, but in addition to being bulky as hell the open cell pad holds water like a sponge..... because it is one. It worked for a 2 night weekend but it's not a long-term solution. I have often thought that an underquit would do the job but never rigged one up to verify.
    Good luck,

After experimenting with a bridge hammock I do find the UQ to be much warmer than pad/mattress cover but the Haven comfort is hard to beat. Probably a better insulated pad is the solution at the slight increase in size/weight. Haven isn't known for their great OEM pads anyway.

I heard of some people putting 80” x 30” reflect-x under the Haven pad to trap the warmth.

I bought the Therm-a-rest XXL MondoKing (80” x 30”). It has an R Value 7… it’s pretty darn warm in winter. The biggest down side: it’s not easily packable. It’s one large 30cm roll.

Another possible, but it’s a little bit smaller and packable is the Therm-a-Rest NeoAir Topo Luxe XL (77” x 30”). Short three inches, but this pad does not fold on itself when you lay in it. R Value 3.7, so not quite designed for freezing temps, but lay down Reflect-X underneath it and stay a little bit warmer.

I have one of the pad overcovers that boosts warmth. Effective but really heavy. Some ccc pad on top of the Haven pad will boost the warmth. I reckon you could build a UQ to fit the Have. It needs to be able to be right up against the bottom. Still need the pad for structure. Pads always feel a bit warmer on the ground as that is how they measure R-Value.
It does work really well on the ground.

Thanks for all the info! Sounds like all the solutions will likely add bulk and weight. As I said the weight isn’t as big an issue as bulk - only so much room in the hatches even on my expedition kayak.

I was intrigued with the ease of GtoG given that Lake Superior shorelines might not even support Tensa poles, but maybe I’ll just stick with my back up tent for those nights. Of course one cannot have too many hammocks, right? At least that’s what I tell my husband when I crave another kayak!

and Shug - I posted this question on a different thread about Haven pads before I saw your reply here. Sorry! I’m a hopeless techno-nudge.

    cheers,
    B

    KayakerBee,

If you pass through Duluth on your trip and need a place to crash youre welcome to stay with my family and I assuming were in town, just shoot me a message. Circumnavigating Superior sounds like one hell of a trip!

Oh my doG! What a wonderful offer, thank you! I don’t know anyone around the Lake so it would be great to have a back up crash pad and also include you on my emergency contact list (if that’s OK) if I need to pull the plug because of weather or equipment problems. I’m launching from Brimley in Whitefish Bay in late May and paddling clockwise around. I’m hoping the early start will improve my chances of finding campgrounds that aren’t booked solid.

Duluth is on the plan - of course I can’t miss a photo op at the Lift Bridge!
