    Cheaha falls overnight

A couple of days ago I was able to slip away after work for a quick overnight trip to cheaha falls! I left after work, drove an hour and a half , parked at turnipseed camp and hiked in a mile to the falls. It worked out perfect! We had a very short break in the weather here- it was almost like an Indian summer fall day ( 60 degrees during the day and 50ish at night). I had a wonderful night, watching the sun set, enjoying a cup of tea and a nice fire! The next day I slept in, had a very lazy breakfast of steelcut oatmeal with brown sugar cinnamon , walnuts and raisins ( great combination!) I packed up and spent a couple of hours exploring around the falls. ( I found an old abandoned road and several very old campsites!). I had a very relaxing hike back to the car and drove back home refreshed and happy! I didn’t hike many miles, but a night in the woods always works it’s magic on me!

FYI: If you want to know what type a certain bear is, sneak up behind it and kick it. Then,
run like crazy and climb up a tree. If the bear climbs the tree and eats you, it's a black
bear. If the bear just pushes the tree over and eats you, it's a grizzly bear : )

Looks beautiful. Is that the closest decent camping to where you live?

To answer your question, the answer is no- Cheaha is about a 2 hour drive from our house (one of my favorites-the Pinhoti trail runs thru it and there is lots of great scenery and solitude!) The Pine mountain trail at FDR state park is only 45 min from us, but they were having a managed deer hunt that day so the trails were closed. The PMT is a great trail and I've spent lots of nights there over the years, but any opportunity to visit Cheaha is always a treat!

Nice trip report! It looks like the falls were running good with all of the rain recently, did you camp at the campsite just before the falls or the shelter?
