What is your motivation for being a Hammocker?

I am a scoutmaster and have been involved with scouts and the outdoors most of my life. I used the quote from Thoreau in my last Scoutmaster Minute; "I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately...". I find that this is a big part of why I love the outdoors. Beats sitting on the couch watching the tube or playing a video game.
I also am seeing some of the responses to the Spaceweasel thread where most are involved in a youth group. I started thinking and realized that I love the outdoors, adventure, and sharing the experience with others; I am just using the youth group as a excuse to get out and do what I want to do. I also like to challenge myself with trying something new each time I go out.

So the question: What motivates or enables you to get outside and spend time in the hammock?

I mostly used small (solo) tents or a bivi bag and on one kayak trip the intended campsite was taken. So our group had to improvise an I found a place between some rocks that was just wide enough - but it was tight. On that trip, a woman brought a hammock and quickly strung it up between trees. I had never seen such a thing. I thought hammocks were made of cotton "rope", had wide spreader bars, and lived on back patios. Back home, REI was having a 20% off sale and I picked up a Hennessy Expedition and tried it on my next car camping trip. I had such a comfortable sleep when camping. The rest - many, many hammocks and TQ/UQ/tarp combinations for all seasons - is history.

I am a gear junkie and love researching and testing new gear. Tents are just too simple and boring. Hammocks have so many different things to play with.

    Oh and they’re comfortable.

Ground pounding is painful. If I had not discovered hammocks I would have given up camping years ago.

Hammocking enables me to comfortably get out into the real world and leave all the artificiality of society behind.

Simply a place to sit and do stuff out of the rain, off the ground. It really was that simple for me at the start. Then it grew from there.

Doing anything on the ground other than standing on it is a failing of human ingenuity. I’m pretty sure the first thing ever invented was a chair so one could sit and ponder how to make a bed. My enjoyment of sleeping in the wild has been vastly improved with by the hammock. Every campsite is different but every bed is the same. Double Plus Better.
