You must be one of the people that drop at the trail mouth and camp on the trail. Walk a mile down the lake and you won't see anyone. Overall your hike is 2.5 miles, not too many people will drag their pop up tent, roller cooler, 3 golf clubs, 2x3ft metal cooking grate, full size pillows, queen comforter, diving fins or belly board. This is what I saw last weekend.

Absolutely not. Never have, never will. Sound travels very easy over sand snd through those dune hollows. I bushwhack the hell out of that place and have never came remotely close to camping by any actual campsites. It’s an overused, trashed, party city. Wasn’t always that way.
You are right about people hauling in big gear. I saw three young guys caring a 30 pack of beer a couple months ago. And they were miles in .
Assuming you’re looking to camp near or on a Great Lake driving as far as needed...then go for the greatest of Great Lakes, Superior!
This little gem is right on the lake and has miles of undeveloped beach. If weather is too rough, Blind Sucker campground is only a few miles inland as a plan B.

And there's another gem Donk and I have hung at along Lake Superior in Whitefish Bay near Brimley: Bay View. We got 4 hammocks in there with no issues in the site at the far west end.

Fisherman's Island in Charlevoix (site #28 is nice and the first lake side one just past the ranger station - walk in site), and like Donk said, Lake Superior State Forest Campground in Da UP.
