    Just did the 19E to the Nolachucky/Uncle Johnny's. Beautiful section but would be difficult for newer backpackers to do in 3N/4D. Perhaps start at Carvers Gap (as CHKNBONE recommended) and head SOBO. Plus the trail is very rocky and washed out in places.

    Another recommendation for I-40/Standing Bear to Hot Springs. The trail is in much better condition and an easier, but just as beautiful hike that can be done in 2N/3D.

    A beautiful and relatively easy section of the AT is at Grayson Highlands. From Massey Gap, it's about 4 miles to Thomas Knob Shelter (SOBO). There are numerous lovely campsites along the way, as well as plenty of friendly wild horses who may visit you at your campsite depending on where you bed down.

    As a new backpacker, I agree with those who advise dialing in your gear and setup, as well as becoming attuned to your own physical capabilities, prior to committing to a longer journey.
