Chart / Spreadsheet on various materials

I've been reading..and reading.. and it's so difficult to keep track of Hexon vs argon vs. other, vs. 1.0, 1.1. 1.6.. can someone point me to a cheatsheet that gives general information about all these different cloth types and thickness? Thanks

Argon/Hexon/HyperD, etc. are the types of fabrics. The number relates to its weight in oz/sq. yd.

You'll find that the various vendors sell different brands, some of them proprietary. Each fabric has a different feel and opinions re such things as softness and stretch are not always in alignment. The heavier fabrics tend to have less stretch. They are also less fragile. This is, to some extent, where personal preferences and needs/desires come into making the "right" choice.

For example, I like a REALLY firm hammock for most of the time. One I have is a double layer of 1.6. Nobody trying to go light is going to take that backpacking, not even me! A backpacking hammock is almost certainly going to have a bit more stretch that that one as a trade-off for saving weight.

Think about what your needs/wants are for that first serious hammock. Consider your budget. [I'm assuming here that you're looking beyond basic (?), Correct me if I'm wrong]

Be aware that the initial investment in the hammock is only the beginning. Can't get by without suspension. You'll need a tarp and almost certainly will want to invest in an UQ before too long, budget permitting. Then there are all the other add-ons that MIGHT appeal to you.


An analogy might be drawn to owning a boat which is "a hole in the water that you pour money into."

I'd love to have a way to chart the stretch of each material type too

I know someone (the SBO guys I think?) posted a vid showing the different stretch between hexon 1.0 and 1.6 and I thought that was neat. would be interesting to see it for various configurations
