the idea of porch mode with the plastic draped over the porch might work. You'd need to lower the tarp so the edges are at or near the ground though or you'll lose your heat. it's a workable idea though. you can use a mylar emergency blanket and some clothes pins to line the inside of the tarp to reflect and retain more heat as well.

Forgive my forwardness Shug - but since you have "messed 'round with it" did you see any benefits over the traditional set up? What are your thoughts on the draw backs? Can you decrease the insulation you bring in favor of the hybrid shelter? Is it worthwhile bringing the drop cloth?
Much thanks Shug - appreciate good people i's do indeed

I don't want fire anywhere near my tarp.
If I build a fire, it's gonna be small and it's gonna be at least this far away.... got a pinhole burn in a very expensive tent one time from a fire that was a good 30-40 feet away.

I like the idea of the "Super Shelter" and enjoying the radiant heat from the fire. But I'm in the camp that keeps the fire far away from my tarp. I really DON'T want any burn holes in my nice SLD tarp, or even my Kelty Noah 12, my work horse. If I were to try that, it would be with cheap "blue" tarps from Lowes or Home Depot.
As a side note, I really like some of the shelters that the Youtube bushcrafters are building and enjoying in the winter. But I haven't seen any of them build one with using a hammock in mind.
