    Question about dogs and hammocks

    Hey everyone,

Just curious what those hangers that bring their dogs along do as far as sleep solutions for their best friend.

Ive got a Dutchware Chameleon in single layer Hexon 1.6 which is rated for 350lbs. I myself weigh about 220lbs on a bad day and my dog weighs 42lbs. Not as worried about weight capacity if we were to share the hammock as I am about her claws poking holes or abrading the fabric and causing a tear! Ive had her in the hammock with me for short periods of time, and she loves it. Doesn't freak her out and she stays relatively still, but not sure whether I can trust her or my gear enough to have it be my only real sleep option.

What solutions have you more experienced hangers had with bringing your dogs with you? If your dog doesn't sleep in the hammock with you, what do you do as far as insulation / shelter in the cooler months?

I don't have one yet, but some folks on HF do, and like it. Ask HF member Alifeoutdoors. He has one I think and recommended it to me. A dog that size may be a bit much to sleep with inside the hammock...Maybe use an underquilt protector as an under hammock/pet hammock to suspend under your hammock.

My 40 lb. beagle Joey sleeps in my Chameleon with me. Beagles follow their nose, and I just can't sleep with the dog outside the hammock. The only thing is that, when he wants to get out, you better let him out or he might wreck the bugnet. It hasn't happened to far, but he does let me know when he needs a potty break.

This is my original version from several years I had made from a custom vendor. Rick at Cave Creek has built a much more refined and functional version and at about half the cost.

Here is a pic of the Pet Palace by Rick at Cave Creek. Be sure to train your dog to NOT paw at the netting.

Ever notice any claw marks or abrasions from Joey? Already wrecked one of my Blackbirds this month by hanging it too low and hitting a rock. Would rather not destroy two hammocks before I even get out to hike this year. Haha

The pet palace looks interesting, but what do you guys use for insulation? My goal is to have everything my dog needs for her shelter carried in her harness as I don't know if that much extra stuff is going to fit in my Exos.

    A liter of Cola.

EDIT: lol forgot to put the serious answer. She generally carries her own insulation, a small thermarest except during the fringe season where I have a small lightweight dog bed a BPL member made himself then put up for sale. In generally all fits in her dog pack along with her bowls and then I carry her food. I carry a 57L pack though so I have a little more room going than you do.

    Question about dogs and hammocks

Pet Palace. With alifeoutdoors design in mind I helped Rick at Cave Creek develop the Pet Palace. It truest is an amazing piece of gear for you and your pup. I have not seen a better option on the market for hammocking with your dog. Great coverage. Ample room. No bugs on either of you. Great stuff. Rick is also a great guy and does amazing work.

For insulation I have a folded over down blanket my dog uses. But I have an Australian Shepherd and he could tolerate lower temps than my gear could go without any insulation.
