Yes, camped overnight. There are lots of grey areas in Okutama. Just be mindful of others. I usually go find camp off trail and don’t set up until a couple hours before sundown. I’ll try to pack up before the first hikers approach in the morning. It’s all about not being a ご迷惑.

That said, there are a few authorized campsite on trail in Okutama. The best thing about them is they have water, toilets and serve beer.
There are two excellent campsite on either side of Kumotori where you can hang a hammock.
