    Florida Hummidity

    Hi All,

I have a couple of questions I was hoping the fine folks of the group might be able to answer. I’m looking at getting my first hammock. Like most, I’m looking at the WBBB XLC double layer. I’m 6’3”, 250 and I’m wondering about temperature in the hammock. Living in Tampa, things can get rather humid in the summer, and I’m wondering how warm it gets underneath the bug net - meaning, is it going to be a clam bake in there? And if so, are there any hammocks that run cooler than others, based on design or construction?

I wanted to mention that I’m not a great sleeper, and I have a bad back. So bases on this forum and looking around, this is how I got to the Warbonnet.

    Thanks in advance.

    Jason

Jason, if you are going to camp in Fl in the summer you are going to be hot no getting around that but if you don't use that bug net you'll be carried off by mosquitoes. If you are going to camp in the summer best thing I can suggest is to camp on the beach or somewhere that you can get a breeze to help keep you cool. We usually don't camp in the summer because its just too hot and we live in Tallahassee. As far as sleeping good, the hammock takes care of that for us but if we do have a problem sleeping take a benadryl before going to sleep and you'll sleep like a baby!

Yep, that bug net will hold the temps in a bit and block wind so as geronimo articulated so well there's not a lot you can do to keep cool camping in hot humid weather. Get a boat for the warmer weather and use that hammock in the cooler months.

Thanks guys, I like the boat idea. I can imagine it not being too bad some nights, but, yes, I believe the bug net is a must. I own a cabin near Crystal River FL, which is a little north of Tampa. It’s in the woods, and the no-see-ums are brutal sometimes. I’d really like to hang up there. But again, I’m concerned about being hot. Well, I guess I, it’s just part of it.

    Thanks!

I personally don't go out if the overnight low is going to be 73* F or higher. I can handle 73* F, but I'm not sure I could handle anything higher, especially with a bugnet (absolutely required for me).

I'm in South Florida. I don't go out to the mailbox in summer!

I’ve not hammocked in 73 overnight low and humid conditions
I’m guessing you can be cooler by just wearing shorts. Maybe you can pour some water on a tee shirt and drape wet tee shirt over your torso and hope you get cooler. If it’s not working or you get too cold, put tee shirt over ridge line to get it out of the way.
    Good luck

I'm up in Tallahassee and like everyone above said, there's not much you can do about being hot in Florida. Try to set up your hammock in an area that will get lots of wind, and if you can set up your tarp to create a wind tunnel. The bugnet will block a lot of the wind but you will still get some, and you'll be able to feel it on the underside as well.
