Slipping on Cinch Buckle - Solutions?

I had my first fall this weekend. I was hanging in the basement, rigged the cinch buckles up, gave the continuous loop and strong pull and sat in the hammock. About 5 minutes later, boom, I hit the floor. Not great.

Typically I tie a slippery half hitch above the buckle and I just didn’t think to do that this time. I think cinch buckle slipped because the continuous loop with buckle wasn’t quite “centered.” As in, when loaded, the strap was at an angle going into the buckle. Not sure how to explain better, maybe I’ll attach a picture later. I tried to re-install the cinch buckle through the whipping but I can’t seem to get it right. Seems like it matters, but I don’t recall seeing any posts about this specific issue before.

Anyone had this happen? How did you fix it?

Yes they have to pull completely straight. Here is a vid on installing them...

In addition to what wisdom Dutch has passed on I have also found that if the straps are of a slick material it is possible for the straps to slip thru the buckle.

Make sure the metal slide in the buckle is parallel to the sides and not at an angle.

Also make sure you have the strap threaded thru the buckle correctly. When done correctly it is almost impossible for the strap to slip. Done incorrectly and the strap will slide thru the buckle as soon as any pressure is applied

Can you post a pic of the webbing and cinch buckle?

    Here’s the pic.

Actually as I’m writing this, I realized part of my confusion here is I thought “I’ve never had this problem before” but, I did recently remove them and put them on a different hammock briefly. I must not have been paying as close attention when I reinstalled them on the Hennessy.

Yes, the angle on that buckle with respect to the webbing looks dangerous. I've shredded more than one set of straps when the buckle was only slightly off center, and yours looks virtually sideways. Check out Warbonnet's triangle buckles or Dutch's June Bug buckles which eliminate that problem entirely.

Separate question: Is there a reason the continuous loop attached to the buckle is so long? Just curious.

I checked the “is this for a Hennessy” option on Dutch’s site. But I think that’s really for the older models.

It really is. For the flat method you should get a shorter CL.
By the way, why are you not using the end caps?

On the rare occasion mine slip, I throw a bight on a loop, aka a slippery bight or some other such name, just above the buckle. Doesn't slip and is undo by pulling the running end.
