Great info here. I have the same tarp as Polkster13 and while I go to porch mode most of the time, (using either trekking poles if hiking or bamboo/river cane poles I carry when car camping), I really like the idea of the pole mod and would love a simple DIY method.

I'll likely order such a mod on my next custom tarp. Also considering a 2QZQ mod as I've been very pleased with their work and service. For now it's read and learn.

I've eliminated all my tensioners as the center pole will create a spring under the tarp. This spring pulls evenly on all four corner tie outs. I switched to Carbon fiber poles. They are stiffer than fiberglass or aluminum, lighter in weight, and create a better spring.

Interesting idea.. I use a single under tarp pole on my Superfly, using your pole pockets. Never thought to remove the tensioners at each corner, but it makes sense. I am using Dutch Tarp Worms with the shock cord loops.. I'll have to look into ditching the shock cord.

I have the 1/4" ribbon sewn into the tarps ridge. Are there other options worth exploring? Aside from the added dexterity needed to tie the ribbon, and that it's nearly impossible to do with gloves on, it seems to work.

I am using the .344 alu pole under my Superfly. Works a charm!

Absolutely.. I toyed with CF poles instead of alu, but never got around to it. Check out Quest Outfitters.. http://www.questoutfitters.com/Tent_...IBER_POLES_101
Yes, my pack weighs 70lbs, but it's all light weight gear....
