While I think I could talk her into letting me go on a solo trip here in New York State, I don't think I could sell her on the idea of letting me to up to Michigan's UP alone.

Also, I'm a little hesitant about going solo. I've been camping a long time, but I've only been backpacking seriously for a couple of years. I'm still developing my skills. I'm sure I'd be fine, but there is just something holding me back.

Sorry if I hijacked your thread, punkisdead.
No worries. I have done a few solo trips but they're a bit closer to home than Pictured Rocks, and have better cell coverage. I may still solo it if nobody else can go, but I'd probably have to pick up an emergency beacon thing like the Spot, or the inReach Explorer so I could send my wife messages periodically so she doesn't worry. The solo hikes I've done, I've really enjoyed. Last summer when I did the NCT from Hodenpyl south to M-55 I rarely saw any people except for at the major road crossings. Was quite peaceful.

Cell coverage at PIRO is sketchy. I have ATT and had data & text at the Lighthouse, then sketchy coverage to 12 Mile Campground. After that, nothing until Miner's Castle. That's the one thing that gets me about going there: that big stretch of zero coverage in an area that gets tons of summer usage. If you have an issue, most likely someone will find you, but on trips, I do like to check in with my wife at the end of the day just because it makes both of us feel better. InReach or other beacon is something that I'll have to invest in eventually.

Hodenpyle to M-55! Loved that section of of the NCT. Lots of deer and other animals down in Blacksmith Bayou at dusk. Had a close up encounter with my first porcupine!

Sounds like a nice trip! I'll do you a favor and not go, saving your ears from constant complaining about the heat and bugs

It is tempting since I've only done solo trips for the past 10 years, excluding a couple hike-in-hike-out basecamp types. I need to get some hiking partners and do some trips eventually.

You'd probably have more friends if you stopped the complaining about the heat and bugs hahahah
The more I learn about people, the more I like my dog.

I am very interested, was planning this same trip this year with a couple of friends, I'm still working out when I'm doing what, going to try some of the Appalachian trail, and looking at a Linville Gorge trip, I won't know for a few weeks yet. I may be able to pop up there for a weekend excursion if it works out.
