    40 Degree Underquilt Worth Owning?

I currently have a set of 20 and 40 degree down quilts from UGQ. In my experience of using both its always the underquilt that gives out first. So I wanted to ask you all, is it worth having a 40 degree underquilt? I feel like it might be wiser to have a TQ UQ set up of 40/20 and 20/0 then 40/40 20/20. Want to hear what you all think?

I'd say a 40 degree quilt is great for summer use. When night temps dip into the 50s, and the occasional low in the upper 40s.

Any temps near 40 and I'd just use my 20 degree UQ.

Every day is a good day.

I think the 40/20 and 20/0 is the safe way to go .

I think that I am personally starting to see a need for 2 sets of quilts. I have a 40/40 set and may add a 20 set but I live in Texas. Ya'll can enjoy sub 0 temperatures without me

Ya know, it's funny you post this.

I'm one of those "TQ for many temps" guys. But my 20deg UQ has never bothered me, even over what its range should be.

So my answer is [ aside from the 40F's lower weight and bulk on a trip where you know temps won't come to the low end of its range ], an emphatic NO. That is, until I come across a 40F Phoenix for cheap!!!!!

I'm with Otter1 on this one. I use a different TQ depending on temp, but use the same UQ year round. When I'm relaxing inside my house I usually have a 0 degree or 20 degree bag under me with no issues. Unless weight is a problem, I don't see the point. But that what works for me...

I use one because 1) I am a VERY warm sleeper, and 2) backpack where summertime low temps are routinely in the 50s and upper 40s, except for some warm nights in July/August. Otherwise I use my 20° more.

I like the 40's because they pack up small and light: both important factors for me when I'm hiking more than 5 or 6 miles a day. I'm already taking a weight hit by using a hammock and don't want to carry still more weight for an under quilt that is not 100% necessary.

yeah, I agree the under quilt will crap out before the top. if I get unexpected temp drop, I can wear additional clothing but that won't do much for underneath.

my plan is to over-rate the UQ by at least 10* to the TQ, so for my summer set, that means pairing a 30* UQ with my 40* TQ.

since winter is much less forgiving, I think a 0* UQ with 20*TQ gives a lot of room for error...

I have the Ember 2 and it works great for most of my summer use. I just purchased a WB Wooki and I am sure it will open up some new options for hanging.
