There is also the Bogue Chitto State park in Franklinton, La. which is north of Covington.

Stayed there with the scouts last two years in December. Not the most scenic but a good place to try gear. I just found a few trees in the woods. Good bass fishing in the suction canal and a short drive down the guide levee to the lake if you want to saltwater fish or crab if the time of year is right. It was free to camp.

There is a chemical plant close by and Airline Hwy so there is some soothing background noise

Hey now there's one I didn't think of at all. Had no idea you could camp out there. Thanks for the suggestion Nodust, I'll probably drive out there this week and check it out.

It's not the greatest campsite but close and free. Perfect to do some testing. Also there are bike and atv trails in the spillway if fishing isn't your thing.

Site 97 at Fountaibleau is the best spot for primitive hanging. There are a few spots if you are only hanging 3-4 people in the camper sections.

    Update from Fountainbleu SP.
Couldn't get site 97, but 95 is workable.

Still trying to get out to the spillway for a reconnoiter.

Fountainbleu isn't exactly the campground of your dreams. It's in the swamp and looks as if it would be wet and muddy most of the time and it's definitely not a place where you want to get caught in rainy weather. But for a place close to New Orleans where you can test run new gear it'll do.

However, for a site that you have to wade mud and standing water to get to, $20 is a bit of a rip off.
