    Incubator question

On a recent hang where the temperature was hovering near zero degrees, it seemed to me that the shock cord used in the suspension had lost a good bit of its elasticity. This quilt is only a few months old so age is not the culprit, plus it returns to normal as the mercury rises. Has anyone else experienced this at very low temps?

This can happen to shock cord in cold temps as you describe. In my experience some brands seem to perform better than others or may be more accurately a batch to batch difference. Can't say which for sure but have seen difference in performance on same width cord, under same conditions, in similar application that exhibit very different performance.

I usually just shorten mine a bit in deep winter temps. On all my UQs.
Just knot it with half hitch. Usually good after that.

Thanks for the replies. It's good to know that others have experienced this. Today I did some research and found a source for some "premium" shock cord which "has excellent cold-weather working characteristics... flexible to -100F". HERE is the link to it. The price per foot seems reasonable. Maybe I'll order some and do some comparison testing.

Please report back if you order that shock cord. I don't mind tying half hitches, but don't mind paying for that cord if it works!

I ordered and received the cord from that supplier last week... now just waiting for some cold weather to return. If it doesn't happen in the next week or so, I will make room in the chest freezer and try to do a comparison test there. Thanks for your interest.

I'm interested in your findings as well. My shock cord tensioner loops on the superfly do the same thing with my cheap-o shock cord too. I was looking to use regular cord loops in cold temps since I basically have to adjust the tension anyway and use the shock cord when it's warmer out.

Let us know what you think about that stuff! I'll probably order some too to test out here at the shop to compare against our existing manufacturer. Thanks to all the HF members for their help as well.
