    Standing Indian

Has anyone taken a hammock to the summit of Standing Indian? My mom and I will be going in a month and want to camp at the summit (I know it's normally a day trip, wanted to wake up the an amazing view). She said the trees are small but I haven't been and we want to take the hammocks if we can.

Yeah, I think you can do it, but the trees are small so it won't be ideal hanging. You're on an incline, so you do get some clearance even though you're hanging low. Its doable enough that I was considering doing it, knowing that I could continue down to the shelter or to Beech Gap as needed. But I haven't done it yet. Maybe someone else who has will chime in.

Edit: note that the only places I saw to hang were on the trail up and out, I didn't see any place to hang on top where its more flat, unlike Cheoah Bald for example. So, you'll have to wake up and walk a few steps up the mountain to get to the view.

There are definitely some spots on the final approach to the summit that you can hang. There may be some spots just past the summit as well. Keep in mind you will be really exposed up there, and it could get windy.

Also, the views are open to the west, so you probably won't be able to catch sunrise, but it would still be a cool place to be.

I went back and looked at my video but it doesn't show much - I guess I cut out that part of the footage.

If nothing else, there are trees on the climb up as others have noted so your backup plan would be to descend a bit.

Thanks guys, this has been a big help. I am thinking of leaving the bug net home due to the time of year the bugs shouldn't be too much of a problem.

I was there in July, and there were a few skeeters out in the evening but I had no problems at night without a bug net.
