Great American Solar Eclipse - Where will you be?

Oregon hotels have already filled in many places! And come January, Teton permits will be a fool's errand--might put in for it anyway.

If La Nina works out, every ski bum across the Pacific Northwest is going to attempt recreating Solomon's video from last year. That said, I'm thinking Jefferson as Hood will be a mess.

And for you right coast guys, it goes over the Great Smokies!

I live right in the path of it, within a fly fart of the yellow prediction band over South Carolina.

Hanging spots on my back 40 have not been priced yet, but I'm taking offers.

Looks like it will be right over Rabun Bald, 2nd highest peak in GA. Might make a neat trip.

I'm driving 13 hours to see this. First one in my lifetime.

Some sources say that Giant City State Park near Carbondale, IL is the center spot for period of longest totality.

I've been following eclipse events all my life - the one year my home is dead center of the path....and I'll be away on a 6 month walk about on the AT. I'll be somewhere near the Whites or in Maine....figures.

My wife is a solar physicist and with a team of researchers from around the world has set up instruments to measure eclipses in places all over the globe. I've been with her eclipses in Africa twice, but she's also been to the Marshall Islands, Mongolia, Libya, Svalbard, and a bunch of other places over the last 10 years. For this one we will be with a team of researchers at Clemson University.

Here's my advice: the time of totality doesn't matter. The weather forecast does. They have gotten valid data with totality as short as 30 seconds, but had weeks of work wiped out by clouds. So if you have a site with long totality but a forecast for clouds and a nother optional site with less time but clear skies, take the clear skies every time. And bring some welding glass and make a pinhole camera so you can track the progress and see the diamond ring.

    Good luck!

What does the swath represent on the map? Is this the only area that represents a total eclipse?
