    Hammock-eez

I've been lounging here and in hammocks for a little while now and understand most of the concepts, but I still don't know what a number of terms mean: whoopie slings, top quilt, under quilt, and a few other new-to-me concepts. How about a glossary or 'Conventions' thread somewhere that is easy to find for us rookies?

Probably the best way to start is by watching Shug's videos on hammocking for beginners. There is a link on the Hammock Forums home page. There is a lot of good information and entertainment in his videos. If you are really serious, get a copy of the Ultimate Hang (I have a Kindle version) and read it through.

    To get you started:
Whoopie sling - this is something created by arborists (tree surgeons). It is an adjustable suspension made with high strength low stretch braided rope
Top Quilt and Under Quilt - Imagine your sleeping bag sliced lengthwise so you have a top and bottom. The bottom half is suspended under the hammock to prevent you from compressing the insulation (under quilt) and the top half is basically a blanket with a foot box (top quilt)

Read, ask questions and attend a group hang if at all possible.
"Mountains should be climbed with as little effort as possible and without desire. ... To live only for some future goal is shallow. It’s the sides of the mountain that sustain life, not the top. Here's where things grow." - Robert M. Pirsig

The best online glossary for any hobby you'll ever come across is Google. Seriously, not trying to be condescending, but just type the word you don't know into google. You'll find more blogs, pictures and videos than you could ever want showing what the item is, how to use it, where to buy it and often how to make it for yourself.

I agree with doogie, Shug's YouTube channel is a great place to start for all things hammock. That's where I learned everything.

Thanks for the tips, links and suggestions, especially that last one, which I must have glazed over. I also missed the most obvious one; Google.
