    Winter camping in GWNF

I'm a Richmond, VA native that does some weekend trips to hang in the George Washington National Forest. I do a couple 4 night trips with friends, but I'm always up for additional excursions. Late fall and winter trips mean no mosquitos, no 100 degree heatwaves, no venomous snakes. Does anyone else like to get out in the winter? Anybody have any interest in getting a group together for any weekend trips?

I'm hoping to get out a lot this winter. This summer was just brutal. With kid's schedules though it's hard to plan in advance.

Agreed. I have 2 kids so getting away is always a challenge, but a nice reprieve every once and a while.

Yep, Winter is my camping and backpacking season. I haven't even hiked this Summer because with the heat and mosquitos, it's just not enjoyable for me. We have an RV and that's about it for "Summer camping", kids love the campground pool and I love the AC. Back in the day, our Toyota club used to have a "Fall Colors" camping weekend in GWNF out off 33, nice area for sure. I'm just North of GWNF and am game if my schedule allows.

Are you thinking car camping or backpacking?

I live for winter camping! NO BUGS, good frozen food, and ice fishing!

I usually go heavy with a hand pulled toboggan, wall tent, and woodstove, but may try hanging or just take both if in a group and have the just in case hot place set up.

There is nothing like being out there with a blanket of snow on the ground and a warm fire. I am in. In fact I cannot stand this DC commute so I am planning to hit Runkles Gap down by Harrisonburg this weekend.

I'm good with either. I think if you have a few people of different experience levels, then dispersed camping at one of the spots you can drive to makes more sense. I did a backpacking trip to Flagpole Knob with 2 friends and we all set up our hammocks in the grove of trees. That was nice, but the wind can be brutal at the top.

So there are a few that are interested in getting something together for far. Are there any weekend dates that work? November should be in the 30's at night. Nice and brisk with the possibility of some light snow in the mountains. There are some nice places that should accomodate a group of people all over the GWNF. Reddish Knob area, Flagpole Knob area, Switzer Lake, etc. Any suggestions? If we can nail down a date and place I think there will be some interest that builds up.

Great idea. I've noticed these get togethers are easier to plan when the date and location (general) are nailed own early on.
