    French / European

    Hi,
I am new to hammocking, and I kind of like the spirit.
I ive in Paris, France. Anyone looking for a buddy in the area is invited to get in touch with me, as there is a lot to explore around.
I just hope I will make it to sleep in a hammock ! (just bought a Blackbird xlc, and a Yeti 3-season underquilt, waiting for the delivery now...), but I tell myself generations of mariners did, so why not me!
I love camping in the wilderness of our Mother Earth, with a vast horizon in front of me. That is why I hope I will be able to set up my tarp high, and not create a mini house around my hammock, like I see in so many pictures (well, I suppose there is a reason to this I will soon find out at my own expense...)
So I am glad to meet you all passionate nature lovers!
    Rouskof (Nicolas)

Welcome from the Jersey Shore. Sideways rain and wind-blown precipitation might make you rethink mounting the tarp high. Sometimes low and tight is the better way to go!

Welcome to the forums from Marietta GA. Like you, I like to hang my tarp as high as possible so I can see the views. However, sometimes the weather decides that the tarp should be low and tight. Even then it's a good experience, because you're still out there. Happy hanging!

Sorry if I'm replying really late but I'm also in France.
I live in the Nice area where the sea meets the Alps, where you have to pack very light because you are always climbing up a slope and where most trees are conifers because it's too arid for oak trees to grow on the southern side of hills. Because campers are parked in "campings" like refugees, I prefer to go steath and blend in the forest with my hammock. Few people here even think it's possible.
There are unfortunately very few hangers in the region and those who know a bit about hammocks don't know about tree straps, whoopie slings, ridgelines (I can't even translate that term in French: ligne de crete or ligne de toit?). Only rock climbers seem to have a few notions about hanging but they mostly use their own 22kN rated gear which is very heavy.
Anyhoo I'd be glad to meet other hangers in France.

I'm with you on hanging the tarp high. One of the best experiences you can have outdoors, I think, is to experience nature's glory from the safe confines of your dryspace, lounging in a hammock. While there have been a few times I've needed to close up, I'm still able to hang high in my big tarp, and those times are typically few and far between. Sometimes its just a matter of closing up to weather the front coming in, and then opening up to watch it rain after that.

Anyway, good hangin' to ya, and welcome!

    Salut tout le monde!

I live in Kyiv but grew up in Strasbourg... and I often visit France mainly for mountain climbing in the Alps.

So if there is any kind of winter Franco-hang in the pipelines, count me in!
