That may be the best idea yet!! Friday night at an established campground would make things A LOT easier.

We're headed that way tomorrow night. I'll see what there is available. Looks like from pigeon creek campground it's about a three mile hike to any of the other established trails. If the one lot looks good, then maybe we just take the cars to the end lot so that they're at least a mile away, and just camp along the way? Mores to come, if there's anything you guys want me to check out, just say the word....I'll try to get some good pics and directions.

If you're able to pick out a site, or sites that will work that would be great. Suitability of the lots and surrounding areas for hanging would also be good to know.

Slow and easy hiking, then camping where suitable works for me.....

Your time spent checking out, and opinion of, the area are GREATLY appreciated. Thank you!

For those who might not be following the new thread, here's an update:

    "The Plan"
    So....

The tentative plan is to park on Shale Rd at the trail crossing, hike in a couple hundred yards east to the Shelter, set up a base camp, hike back to the vehicle and drive to Wildcat trailhead, then hike about a mile back to our base camp on a well marked, groomed trail. Easy on us, yet fulfills the DNR's requirements.

Camping in the woods just doesn't get much easier than that!

In this pic we can see the trail crossing at Shale Rd as a red dotted line and the shelter as the green icon east (right) of Shale Rd. We should be going slightly uphill as we go east on the trail from Shale Rd.

(Note that the portion of Shale Rd we are interested in is the unlabeled north/south (vertical) white line on the west (left) side of the map. Shale Rd does turn east (right) near the north end (top) of the map. That is the only portion of Shale Rd that is labeled on this map.)

We can easily see from the brown topographic (aka topo) contour lines that we will be traveling on the north (upper in this pic) side of a slight hill. We will then go down a slight hill and up a second hill. Roughly twenty feet of elevation change. The shelter will be on this second hill.

Nice map walk through. I agree and see all of which you said. I hope to make it
