Thank you everyone for the advice! Packs are ready to go & waiting by the door for Saturday morning. I can't wait for a great weekend of hiking.

Report back on your trip, and details of your shuttle experience. The FHT is on my list, very interested. Have a great trip!

Checking in on this thread. I have spent many hours over the last 20 years around the Burrell's Ford area. That is one of the most beautiful places in the Southeast. The hike you mentioned is fairly popular and you should see several people along the route.
Someone mentioned water as an issue but I don't know how that could be. That trail follows the "Wild and Scenic Chattooga River" for many miles and there are creeks throughout that entire trek once the trail leaves the river.

I am looking forward to your report when you get back.

The hike went really well. There are a few stretches where there wasn't water available for a couple miles (climbing down to burrell's ford & climbing out of the Chattooga River section until Pigpen falls both come to mind). We did really well, hiked about 8.5 miles the first day till just before Fish Hatchery rd & camped near a small stream. image.jpg
Then woke up early & got to Burrels Ford before lunch. Then spent Sunday afternoon along the river, cursing some of those spots where you hike way up above the river for a while, then back down. The pups swam & we took lots of breaks.

Hiked 11 miles that day, managing to overshoot the last riverside campsite & put ourselves in a pickle. Didn't have the energy to get to pigpen falls, but hikers going the other way said that was the next good place to camp. Thankfully hammocks are more forgiving than tents. Pitched my hammock in the slightly less steep hills in the middle of a switch back & just staked the dogs tent well so they wouldn't roll down. Dogs were so tired they wouldn't eat until after they had napped for almost 4 hours. We slept ok though, I was probably more comfortable than they were.
Monday we got to Pigpen falls early for a good boost of energy & a much needed refilling of water.

The next few hours were wonderful. That part of the trail isn't challenging, just a nice walk in the woods. Got sunny & hot (heat index was 98) so we took it slow & drank lots of water. Ended up carrying the dogs packs after lunch because it was just too hot for them to wear them. Heard thunder about a mile from the end & hustled the last bit to the car. Got there just before the downpour started. All in all a great weekend with lots of stories to tell for the next couple of years.

Sounds like you and your pups had a great trip! I'm glad it worked out. How did you end up handling the shuttle service?

I ended up getting a shuttle from Nancy from the FHT website. I paid her $35 plus since I'm a potter I gave her a handmade mug. She was great! She has dogs & had a cover for her back seat. She even drive me past all the road crossings I'd be hiking past & pointed out where the trail exited & entered at each spot. Offered to come pick me up if I ran into trouble as well.
