NY - Assistance Needed - Bear Mtn, Ft Montgomery area

    Hello,

I will be traveling to Bear Mtn area to re-start a section of the AT in a couple of weeks. Traveling via Amtrak and Metro North to the area from Savannah, GA. Can not bring camping stove propane canisters on train. Does anyone in the area know of a place in Ft Montgomery, or within a few miles of there, that carries MSR/JetBoil type canisters? Post Exchange on West Point does not have this item (bummer)!
    Thanks for any help.

I don't know of any outfitters in the immediate area. Instead I would suggest mailing it to yourself.
    Send it to

    Hope this helps,

    thanks,

Can't send thru the US Mail - flammable. Could send UPS/Fedex but that costs more than hiring a taxi and driving around for a few miles away from Ft Montgomery.

You can mail a gas canister as long as it is small enough, travels by ground, and is properly labeled.

You said Amtrak to Metro North. You're most likely transferring in Manhattan. You could go to REI on Lafayette and Houston Street and buy a canister there before taking your Metro-North train. Or, contact Gear to Go Outfitters in Brooklyn, NY, I think they sometimes do deliveries to trail heads in the area.

Hey, thanks for info on REI.
Just checked the maps. A long way to REI from Penn Station and Grand Central Station. Don't want to mess with subway or taxis to get around.
I found a place north of Bear Mountain, about 10 miles. I am going to give them a call and see what kind of deal I can get on a delivery to Garrison Metro station.

I'm not sure if Sunny Sports even has a retail presence now, they seem to be only by mail. But I could be wrong.

Other Manhattan options: walk to Paragon Sports at 18th and Broadway (head east from Penn, walk south on Broadway, about a mile) and get your fuel there. Then walk east some more to Park Avenue, and it's about 1.5 miles north to Grand Central Station.

More on your way to Grand Central is a West Marine on 37th Street between 5th and 6th but the smallest propane cylinder they carry online is a 16.4 oz size. Would that work for you? You could order it to pick up at that store.

Finally, the subway would be quick and pretty direct for me ( a local ), so here are directions to REI in case you change your mind.

Once at Penn Station, get outside onto the street, as the interior is a confusing maze. Walk 2 blocks east and one or two north to 6th Avenue and 34th Street, buy a $6 metrocard in the subway station, take the "Downtown & Brooklyn" F train to "Broadway-Lafayette". You're across the street from REI. Do your shopping, and take the uptown 6 train (inside the same station as the F) to Grand Central 42nd Street. Done.

Thanks for all the suggestions. REI trip sounds doable, even for an old guy.

I also found a place in Cold Spring, right next to Metro North line station there. They carry MSR brand. Name of the store is "Old Soul". They do a lot of kayak/canoe trips etc. Just will have to taxi back to Ft Montgomery, about 10 miles or so.

One or the other of these 2 options should work just fine.

depending on when you're arriving, I don't live far from garrison and would be happy to help out and drop off a canister. PM me and maybe we can work out some details.
