I know this thread is old but I want to pitch in, if it is winter I use my warmest bag, period. For me that is a -20f bag. Even if it is just going to get into the +20's I still use my -20 bag. You can never be to warm, but being cold sucks at least and obviously can be life threatening. In the summer I use a +12f bag if it is not going to go below freezing. I would only use a 30 or 40 degree bag if I knew it was going to stay above 50. Maybe I sleep cold

I fully agree Durtsurf. In the last 12 month when I was hanging outdoor (WB XLC and WB UQ Edge) between 20°C and -5°C, I always used the same bag (-10°C). If it's too warm, I simply open it a little bit. My recommendation is simply: train, train, train. Go out as often as you can and experience what isolation you need for what temps. I'm looking forward getting the WB travelsock (this will open a new temp window for me)
