Trip report is open

Well I made it up last Thursday and it was great to get a winter trip in before it's over for good. It took an extra hour because of some black ice north of Lansing; sat for about 30 minutes and another 30 minutes at 40mph or so. I finally got to the parking lot at 10:20PM and got moving. It was clear, calm and cold. Everything was coated in a frost, the kind where all the trees looked like they had tiny Christmas lights on them sparkling as my headlamp hit them. Very cool!
Hiking in to the lower cabin.
I reached the cabin at 11:15PM and set up. It was now 9°F and so calm you could practically hear your heartbeat, so it was definitely time for PORCH MODE. I almost skipped the tarp completely, but wasn't sure about frost forming on me.
Down to 7°F the first night. 9°F when I woke up. I'm glad I brought my Jetboil for hot coffee in under 2 minutes!
Camp
Hiked up to the honeymoon cabin. I had to see this at least once before they tear them down soon. What a great view!
Doggger came in Friday morning and I was admiring his hot tent after he got set up. We sat around the fire at night and I enjoyed all his great hiking/kayaking stories.
I was going to stay thru Sunday, but I decided to head out Saturday to get some things done at home.
I'm looking forward to making it with the group next year. I was never a pulk kind of guy, but I think I will put one together for the group hang next year.
Nice trip report! Looks like you set up behind the cabin...correct? Glad you got to experience Green Timbers in all it's winter glory. See you next year!
Yes not too far from the cabin. Perfect little spot which ended up being close to Doggers setup the past couple weekends. 7° the first night; 23° the second. 32-34° during the day. But winter is definitely over starting now. Come on Winter 2016-2017...be good to me!!
Glad you got at least one decent winter hang in.
Figured I would post this here. I stopped by GT on my way back from the UP recently. They're doing a good bit of clearing on the trail to the honeymoon cabin. I got one last shot since they are tearing these down. They've been saying that, but apparently it is finally starting next Monday (said a guy I talked to there). I also spoke with Michigandave today and he thought the same.
Cabins down, raping the woods, can't have anything nice...the state says so. But I'm surprised that honeymoon cabin lasted to long with that deck railing being weaker than tiddlywinks. You would think it to be a liability risk to someone.
Clearcutting and making some "roads". I doubt it's just access to the cabin since that route would be about the same grade and less work. I thought they were clearing out pines for pulp or whatever, but the guy I talked to there thought it was all oak. Big wide swath too.
