Not uncommon but always cool. I've seen bear lumbering across the road flipping off traffic on more than one occasion. The first time I had my camera out. The second time was still fun. The third time I was annoyed that traffic was stalled. You are much more likely to see a bear in town than in the woods.

Also, Cades cove is thought to be the epicenter of black bear activity in an area that is already widely thought to be the most densely populated black bear habitat in the country.

Gburg, pf, and Sevierville are a ton a fun, and your timing is great. Come thanksgiving traffic is unbearable, and the roads through the park are often closed for ice. The rangers and tourist guides are always very helpful, in my experience, with redirecting you to clear roads.

I love the smokies. Have fun!
