Great report and great pics! I love the Manistee N.C.T. loop and would love to do more of the north country trail, thanks for the info.

Thanks for the comments from everyone! I forgot to mention in my trip report that the only time I had any rain was on day 2, just as I got into camp and was beginning to set up. Probably would have been fine with my 11' tarp without doors, but better safe than sorry.

Fantastic trip report, thanks for sharing! I'm from northeast Indiana, but my wife and I own a little land in the eastern upper peninsula. The NCT is within a few miles of our land and I've thought about hiking and exploring some of it. This just wet my appetite more. Thanks again!

I love the section from 12 rd north of mesick to Old 131 campground! That new section of the NCT is a good one too! unfortunately there is a lot of garbage along there as you noticed. Looks like a good trip!

That really was a nice section of trail and it would have been nicer without the garbage. I didn't post the pic, but there was an abandoned and vandalized camper just north of the "wilderness" toilet with a view. Too bad some people have no respect for their environment.

Physical age is one thing, but as long as you still want to get out there and don't mind some occasional discomfort, you should be fine. I'll hit 54 this year and am thinking of commemorating the event again with another hike. Last year I learned a lesson about pushing myself too far, but once you're on the trail, all that is in the past and every step is a new adventure.

I still love hiking the NCT and I've pretty much done everything in Michigan's Lower Peninsula. I guess it's on to the UP, start at Munising and work my way west to the Porkies.
