I've seen many threads asking about what to do when there are no trees. A very good question and one that has many different answers. Using our UGQ Tarp Dongles you now have a quick way to rig the tarp, then using two 24" piece of shock cord (12" loops) you can rig the hammock to act as a bivy. Not ideal as you will need a ground cloth and consideration for a pad of some sort but HEY!!! You can't have it all....

ZERO trees were hurt in the taking of these pictures, Heck, ZERO trees were even used....

This setup provides shade, rain protection, and all IMPORTANT insect protection.

1) Set up tarp with UGQ Tarp Dongles

2) Larks head shock onto whoopie slings or continuous loops at both ends of hammock.

3) Attach to S-Biners at end of tarp.

4) Adjust hammock suspension and stake out hammock. Don't forget your ground cloth....

THIS IS NOT A STRUCTURAL HANG AND HAMMOCK WILL ACT AS A BIVY ON THE GROUND WHEN OCCUPIED.

Good job. We had to do this on the Middle Fork Salmon, only 1 out of 6 nights. That is also my preferred method in the Grand Canyon, if there is a chance for rain. Can't stand to be in a tent.

As I was setting this up it had me wondering if there is a suitable pole for the system that is both collapsable and strong enough to actually make a structural hang........ Eliminating ANY sag to prevent droopy trap is an important consideration. I'm no engineer and have a vague understanding of the forces on the pole, just enough to be dangerous.....

While not necessarily backpacking friendly, I had three 18" poles cut from chain link fencing top rail. They have the tapered ends that fit into each other so you can stack them to complete the whole pole system. The top one has a SS eye-bolt through it to hook the hammock on and two straps that go out to stakes to counter my weight in the hammock. I built two systems and they work fine, but normally only use one since I can find one tree (usually).

May not be the answer you were looking for, but wanted to share.

I'm aware of the handy hammock, seen it in person. Not motocamping and back packer friendly especially carrying two....

I agree that it's not for lightweight backpacking, but afaik it's the lightest stand available??

You're ground setup looks good, I assume you would drop the hammock to the ground before getting in? I hope never to have to go to ground on a hammocking trip, it's just a shame that Scotland has more long trails where hammocking is not possible than ones that are. It's nice to see it setup like that though. The cat cuts on that tarp look miniscule!

I've been searching for HF threads on the Hammock Bliss Sky Tent (v 2 now out). Can't find. They also show going to ground options.

I like the design. A bit redundant for me. I just use the split ring on both ends of my ridge-line on my tarp to loop over my trekking poles. Works well.

I suppose some tarps might not have split rings on the peaks though and this would work great.
