The clean ridge line (DIY trick)

There are several ways to make a ridge line including with fixed eyes in both ends.
I have always been annoyed by the end sticking out on my adjustable ridgelines.
When my ridgelines have been adjusted I rarely touch them again but I like the option to be able to just in case.
I am not sure if it has been done before I got the idea yesterday but this is how I did it.

    • Adjust your ridge line to your preferred length.
    • Place a safety pin approx in the middle of the buried section. The reason for this is so it does not slide while hiding the end.
    • Hand stitch a lock seam near the safety pin. I stitched it with a contrast color so it’s easy to see. In case I want to adjust the line later it is very easy to remove but otherwise it adds a bit of security.
    • Wrap some thread around the line just after the exit hole. The reason for this is it makes it easy to identify the location.
    • Cut the end to your decried length.
    • Now pull the end in just like how you would do it when making an eye splice.
    • Remove the safety pin and you are done.

You now have a clean looking ridge line and you can slide a ridgeline organizer in the full length if you want to. Just pull the end out and re do everything if you need to.

You can do this on any size line you can splice.

Ummmmm... doesn't that defeat the purpose of adjustability?

[Nevermind. I thought you were talking about a TARP ridgeline. Once I found the right hammock ridgeline length I simply made a dogbone that size.]

Perfect system! I have also switched to this due to the dangling end of the adjustable ridgeline tickling my nose at 3:00

Do you leave the tread in? Does the bury need to be milked or come loose if not?

I used an adjustable ridge line to find my preferred length. I then made a fixed length with a locked bummel on both ends.

How to create a locked brummel using only 1 end of the rope…: http://youtu.be/rU1b1iYgdgw

Keep the adjustable line around for future or reuse for something else. I have found that the 83% of the hammock length rule has worked well. I have rarely adjust ouside an inch or so From that number.

Yes I leave the sewing tread in. Only the red tread has to be removed if it ever has to be adjusted but as I wrote I almost never do. If you want it to be adjustable this solution is not for you.

Nice and neat looking. The only issue I see is if you want the RL to stay an exact length you need to take the reduction in length caused by the additional burying into acount. Looks like there is a lot of tail in the picture which can shorten the overall length by inches depending on how much is being buried. I think it's like 1 inch for ever 6 inches of bury. So if you know for a fact that the extra length will shorten the overall RL length by a 2 inches you can then set it 2 inches longer than desired and let the additional bury shorten the RL to where you want it. I know some people say they can feel the difference in small increments in RL length. I personally wouldn't notice but just a thought to consider if you like to be precise.

True , thanks. I think my tail was about 8-10” after I cut it but it did not matter for me with the loss of 1”+

Yeah it wouldn't make a difference for me either. Thanks for the pics.

The clean ridge line (DIY trick)

I've been thinking that I need to do something with my tail end on my adjustable ridgeline. While I don't have problems with it

it is aggravating having a tail hanging down and it's aggravating when moving a ridgeline organizer from one end to the other!
Two heads are good, three are great, but all heads at hammockforums is the best case scenario!
