Can't help you with the Devil's Path, but you should have nice colors when you get there. The temps dropped over the weekend and the trees look like they're ready to change.

Suggestions? It's not the Whites or the Pemi but don't underestimate this challenging hike. If you're going on the weekend Id also expect company.

I've done both the Devils Path and the Escarpment Trail and would recommend the latter. They are both around the same length bit the Escarpment Trail is more picturesque.
Well, i dont know about 'crowded' but will be into leaf peeper season and if you go on a weekend then you can figure that out...Are you planning on staying at shelters/sanctioned 'camp here' spots or just going far enough off trail and stealth camping? You should probably ask a mod to move this to "trip planning=northeast" too rather than 'trip reports'.

Don't get me wrong, the Devils Path is a nice trail, I just think the Escarpment trail is better, especially if this is your first trip in the Catskills. There is more to see, although you will run into more people on the Southern end of the trail. A nice way to go is to hike the blue trail to the North Lake campground (a side trip to Boulder Rock is recommended) and then go through Mary's Glen up to North Point. There are a few nice waterfalls going that way. From North Point you won't see that many hikers and the trail becomes pretty rugged. Here is a link describing the trail. Good luck with either choice!

I would also agree the Escarpment trail is beautiful. I've yet to hike it end to end, but the sections I've been on have left me wanting to go back. It will be very dry though, be prepared to drop off it to find water or bring more than you'll think you need.
