I have a pair of synthetic insulated pants with a zipper that runs from ankle to a couple inches below the waist. It has a draft tube along the zipper. It makes changing alot easier. This is not for everyone but I like it.

Edit: a strip of grosgrain separating the zipper from insulation helps prevent pitching the draft tube material in the zipper.

Most folks will only hike in down insulated pants once. You will cook in them.
Skiers and Snow boarders use insulated pants however they are not burning the calories one does while hiking.

Deep winter trekers(xcs or snowshoes) use re-inforced insulated pants but prefer synthetic since the legs are in deep possible wet snow.

IMO down insulated overpants work best around camp and to sleep in, extending your quilt range.
Easy on easy off would be a big plus. No real re-inforcement would be needed which would help keep the weight down.

Anyway Paul those are my thoughts and suggestions. I would be interested if you keep them light and make them easy on/off.

I'm interested. Down pants are on my list of 'next round' items. (I haven't purchased the hammock or quilts yet).

I agree with Outback, as I was reading your description I was thinking I wasn't sure I'd need reinforcements but in truth, there's far more that I don't know than what I know.

I suspect that reinforcements will be an option.

    Reasons for reinforcements:
Think of kneeling on the ground going through your gear, making a meal, tending the fire. You sit on a log or rock. The 15d fabic is tuff but when we put our weight on it and drag it across an abrasive surface it might have its limits and the cost of the down that may come out.

One can argue that you need to know how to treat you gear and I agree. Better lighter gear needs to be treated accordingly. It does not need to be bulletproof like all the big stores/companies make for warranty purposes. That said, I also know how some gear will get treated in use even with care. So a few ounces for the strategically placed patches I will gladly take the weight.

I use my insulated pants are around camp, walking the dog in winter, and once to shovel the snow. I wouldn't hike in them I have a base layer and heavier trail pants for that.

I've been in the market for a while now. Less options would work well for me as in camp/sleep only.

Very interested. Looking forward to seeing the progression.

On a side note, and I realize this is a production nightmare but a potential short inseam option would be great.

Great idea Paul. I use a pair of insulated pants at work, but they are heavy and a comfort rating of 0 degrees.
    Straight out of Clayton.

Most physical hike: Grandfather Mountain, NC. Aug 13.

I don't need to make my pack lighter. I need to make my (_*_) lighter.
