I was just at YRSF yesterday. The stream at Brown's hollow is running. There was no firewood at the campsites this time. I work Friday night but I'll try to make Saturday.

Through a quirk of scheduling, I ended up with Mon, Tues, Wed off so tomorrow night after work, I am hopping in the car and driving the 5 hours up to the SHT for some fall colors hiking and hanging. ...
Fellow Mason City-ite! Go to the superior hiking trail assoc. site and become a member. Used to be that membership included the excellent guide book and map pack. Definitely worth a look. Also...
Definitely hit the SHTA page and order the trail maps and guide book. They are a must have.
I couldn't get the weekend off so I can't make it this year. Have a great hang everybody. Yellow River is a great spot.
Just saw this today. I'll put in a request to get the time off work and try to make at least one of the days. I was just at YRSF a couple weeks ago and the Brown's Hollow creek was running strong...

This has probably already been posted but what the heck. Looks like it would be a good companion to a GT or ENO on the cheap.

I'll just hang in the spot I used last week. I think one of my tarp stakes is still there :)
WOOT! I got the weekend off so I am in for at least sat night. Thanks for getting the ball rolling hiking dad. Hefferns Hill is fine by me. I'll try to get off work early fri so I can hang at...
Well I'm no expert but for the main hang, I think Brown's Hollow would be much more newbie friendly for site selection/car access. With car access comes water access and a place to store lots of...
OK copyright issue. FYI don't use zep in a youtube video.

weird. works when I click the link here. I'll check my youtube page to see if its been flagged for some reason.
Took a quick trip over to the Yellow River State Forest to shoot a quick down and dirty tour of all 4 back country campsites. The weather was beautiful with 71 degrees that afternoon and 60 that...
I went over to YRSF yesterday and shot some video of all 4 backpacking campsites. These are free, no reservation, primitive sites. I think Heffern's hill might not be ideal for the group hang on...
Its a big multi-site. Its a dry camp but it is close to the paint river (5-10 min walk) Its a shorter walk than from browns hollow to car access last year. I almost headed over there today but...
Started with a HH big hex. Still have it and its a fine tarp. In the past few years its been joined by a warbonnet BMJ and a superfly which see the most use. BMJ for 3 seasons, superfly for winter.
Chances are looking pretty good that I will make at least Saturday. So i will most likely be there.
If I can wrangle the time off at work, I'll be there. My Iowa hang got cut short a day last year so I'd like to meet the folks I missed. If we set up at Brown's hollow we can stage a few cars close...
Check out Paul Bunyan, Blackduck state/Chippewa national forests that surround leach lake.
I've got a couple on youtube but they are none too good.

That is one challenging stretch of trail. You and your father in law are better men then I to get that kind of millage on those up and downs! Still that is my favorite stretch of the SHT.
I hang mine from my hammock suspension or just lay it on the ground under my hammock if its not too wet.

I have one of these, though I haven't used it in a couple years. I put an amsteel loop and webbing cinch buckle suspension on mine. I used some fabric glue to put a few squares of velcro to address...
Had one go up my shirt sleeve while I was riding a motor cycle and proceed to sting the crap out of my shoulder back and side while I frantically pulled the bike over to get it out. I haven't cared...
Is it a Jam 30, 50 or 70?
Until seeing Shug's videos, I would not have dreamed of taking a hammock out in the winter. Now I have a pulk and a whole winter hanging rig. Thanks, Shug!
I have one and have had it down in the upper 30's and survived. I would rate it as a 40 degree bag.

I use stakes for the same reason I use a SRL in my hammock. Maybe they aren't necessary but I like to be able to set up the same way, quickly, every time. 6 MSR groundhogs do the trick just fine. I...
I use one with mine just for convenience to I can hang it in the snake skin then slide the tarp on the prussics for optimal coverage when I deploy the tarp. Definitely not required, though.
Here is the newest update on the SHT. The good news is from gooseberry falls on north, the trail is passable. The bad is that several sections will be closed for an extended period. ...
I know when they built a lot of the bigger bridges, they brought in the lumber by snowmobile and then did the actual construction in the spring. I hate to imagine hauling 2x12's and 4 x 6's miles...
what is this "Research" you speak of? My DIY projects go pretty quickly. Pretty horrendously as well.
As the fellas from the Iowa Hang can attest, I snore like a chain saw in my hammock. Sometimes Ill even wake myself up with a particularly loud snort.
Now I just need to get in better shape. Who often do you get up to the SHT?
That is a great spot. You could get a lot of hammocks in there. Thinking about starting there and heading north this fall when I get a couple weeks on the trail.
It is a great trail and well worth the trip. Get the guide book if you go. It is entirely worth it.
Thanks for watching, Shug. I do love me some Stanley Brothers. I agree that fall is THE...
Well one night there were wolves howooooooooling. After a particularly woo-ish one, I just had to add in "BUDDY!" Saw a wolf track where I had gotten water earlier. BIG!
It was nice to hit...
Just spent a few days hiking on the SHT. Did parts of the Caribou River section, The Beaver Bay section, and Section 13. Weather wasn't the best but my gear worked great.
A special Thanks to...
just had this happen to me on the SHT in my WBBB, One of the buckles on the webbing was twisted and down I went. I was hanging over a big rock that I was using as a night stand but luckily I missed...
Through a quirk of scheduling, I am off work til Thursday. The car is packed and in the AM I'm heading up to the Superior Hiking Trail for 3 nights/4 days of hiking and hanging. Going to hike from...
If you go the hammock gear route they will make it with lighter materials if you prefer. My M50 20degree phoenix weighs 15.3 oz.

Glad I checked the weather before I headed out this morning. Heavy Rain/thunderstorms/flooding/stationary front. I don't mind a bit of rain...
Try with the pad IN the sleeping bag.
Drat. well I'll pack the WBBB then just to be safe and treat my clothes with premethrin tonight. I'm looking forward to a few days on the trail. Last time I was out, there was still snow on the...
Anyone been up on the Superior Hiking Trail in the last few days? Most importantly, are the black flies out yet? Any skeeters? Debating on which hammock to bring, what bug dope if any etc etc. I...
Hammock - stock webbing suspension for a WBBB with 2 biners
