yes... i certainly understand in principle... it is just that sometimes the letter of the rule is what is interpreted instead of the intent... i'd hate to get to a camp and have them want to inspect...
that scouting file was exactly what i needed! thanks so much...
reading through that, though, i wonder if myog hammocks and myog suspension is prohibited... from this line: "Use only the...
folks,
my son is in cub scouts and one of our camps that we go to does not allow hammocks. the camp ranger has asked me to propose a council-wide standard hammock guidelines or process to the...
i just made a grappler hitch myself... it looks really cool and way easy to tie... i can't wait to try it out and replace all my soft shackles...
after looking at this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jGToqEU2-U i'm thinking now maybe a prussik knot (or some other sliding compression knot) would be better... just larkshead my amsteel...
wait, how do people attach whoopie slings to their continuous loops? i think i've completely mis-understood how those are attached, then.
Except then the webbing is the length of the adjustment I want. Plus I have a channel not a whipped hammock.

that looks great! i've never heard of it. it solves the annoying problem that every time i open them and then put the strap around the tree, the soft shackle falls to the ground. i will check into...
ok... i think i got my suspension all dialed in, but i wanted feedback in case i'm doing something that'll dump me on my butt or break a tree or something.
here are my design goals (in no...
looks like a school district is having a garage sale:
https://www.facebook.com/ahsd25/posts/1743299445916712
might be worth a drive... says "nothing over $100"
i have a 5 oz underquilt and it gets a bit cold near 40° and certainly below 40°... if you went 5 oz, you'd definitely be good in the 40°'s but i would guess 3.6 would be a bit cold in that area......
instead of a secondary suspension in my apex underquilt, i sewed in a cordlock in each corner that has the main suspension running through it (basically, i ran both the main suspension line and the...
Idye is a dye meant for plastics. It colors it pretty good but it seemed like the boiling process weakened the material. Others have used shoe polish or even permanent makers.

i have also noticed that these quilts aren't very compressible... i'm guessing down would be more so... down just seems so much more difficult to work with... i'm not that great at sewing
the...
i recently took my apex 5.0 underquilt and top quilts camping... it got down to about 37° F at night... i was wearing a long sleeve shirt and pajama pants and socks... in the night, i got cold on my...
there is a different type of tyvek (type 14) that is already soft like material and meant to be sewn:
http://intothewind.com/Item--i-402
it is also completely white without the tyvek logo on it.
ok... so i HAD to use the magnets for something... while magnetic connectors for hydration systems is nothing new, maybe your idea of using grograin for magnet connectors is new.. every time we take...
I made my organizers and a gear hammocks out of organza. I'll bet if you got 4 yards of organza, you could cut a strip for a snakeskin then have leftover for a gear hammock and an organizer or two....
I tried the $ store method and it didn't work for me. Too easy to tear.
What I did was use strips of no see um left over from making a fronky style bug net. I just sewed them straight in a single...
i'm hiking with my kids... we'll likely have a limited range... and my daughter uses a bivy sack so she'll be all snotty about me needing to find the right tree...
ok... so i'm trying to plan a hammock trip to someplace i haven't been... i live in az and some places are mostly small shrubs and brush but with trees near the creeks.... some areas are more woodsy...
i meant the hammock material... would it wear through from being clamped on so much? i guess with the half net you don't remove the magnets to get in and out... i think i would prefer a full sized...
both my kids have full sized hammocks (10'). the one thing i noticed is that they don't quite get the "sleeping at an angle" thing so they like a much shallower hang. as a result, their structural...
i really love this bugnet magnet idea... i wonder if the material is going to "wear through" from the magnets or does the grograin protect it from that
Isn't having the end sealed together a pain when you try to pull out strands to do a taper for a splice?
as i understand it, you want the outer shell a little loose so that the apex can loft up and doesn't get compressed.
for curves or angles (like in a bridge hammock i made) i don't roll the hem, i just use another piece of fabric and fold that over to create a channel. it is tons easier than trying to roll a hem...
for longer cuts (quilts, hammocks, etc) i use a 6' metal ruler at home depot and a large piece of pressboard underneath. i then use a soldering iron for breathable material and a rotary cutter for...
yes... that is not what i did... but i like that...
here is what i did:

where the red is buried into the blue. it might mean, however, that there is more force on the tip from the...
well... i certainly haven't slept overnight in it... and i'm not sure about the specifics of rope splicing... i will tell you this that the loops i made have tension on both sides of the outer shell...
That sounds kinda like the workflow I used though I don't think I had to install and remove so many times. I measured my suspension distance between head and foot spreader bars before starting then...
what was the trick that finally worked for you? i want to make sure i go back to my pictures and warn others so they don't have the same problem.
i used bent washers instead of sewing bobbins......
that is what i did... since i use just one piece of amsteel for the whole suspension, i hang one side (the side with the two eye loops) on a chair, then find the center of the other side and hook...
oh, and i haven't put end caps on mine yet... i'm not sure it needs them unless i wanted to do an integrated bug net or something similar... i was thinking i'd do a gear loft just above my head that...
love the video!!!
i made this and it turned out nice... i found, however, that i prefer gathered end hammocks after i made it... oh well.... i saved it and someday i may re-visit that.
one...
we made a backpacking swing from a 72" x 60" hammock... this would likely work great for the same thing... 128767
we hang it by throwing two lines over a branch... it has tree straps for each line...
Nice results but you might be careful with anything dyed coming into contact with food or beverages. Most of those dyes are quite toxic.

oops... nevermind, i think i found it:

ok... so i see alot of talk about a "slippery larks head" for adjustable suspension, but i can't seem to find anything that tells how to tie it. can someone explain it to me or point me to a video...
nice job! looks great!
organza works great and is much tougher and much easier to sew than tulle. it also comes in a wide variety of colors and even different textures. the only problem is that it...
i took a 58" wide piece of organza and cut it at 48" then cut that into one piece 48" x 36" and one 22" x 32". i then made a gear loft with shock cord in the two side channels out of the 48" x 36"...
very cool... love the color!
i made stuff sacks for my hammocks and they were large, but i was glad i did when i added the bug net (like caminante said)...
i found that for kids, they like the...
i made some synthetic top quilts with grograin channel for forming the foot pocket. the grograin is way more stiff than the ripstop. when i gathered the foot pocket, i still had a big hole because...
I got a walking foot for my sewing machine and that helped a lot.
Both sides do overlap. It is easier to get in the side that has the flap on top. But you can get in the other side too.
don't be sorry for the questions... i'm guessing others may have them too.
since the tops are connected about 9" down the opposite side of the ridgeline, the shortest distance for them to sit can...
yeah... the bottom is open with shock cord in it. you can tighten that closed or at least tighten it enough to snug against the bottom of your underquilt. you can then get in from the top or the...
if you watch this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfEM6yEO268
you basically follow that, but instead of one long piece of fabric folder, you use two pieces of fabric and don't sew the...
ok... so i started in on our bug nets. i wanted something removable and i have an irrational fear of zippers, so i started looking at fronkey style and ted (top entry detachable) and then i though:...
