Agree with everyone, this comes with experience. Camping for years has helped me with it.

In general, I take the "what you can't see, hear or feel, can't hurt you".

I use the same pad, it's excellent and a perfect fit.

I also don't use any under quilt since the pad is insulated. NOTE: I have not gone below 40s.....

Black bears, raccoons skunks are very common around here. I don't really fear them but they do come around at night. I'm thinking about deploying fishing line and fish alarm around the camp parameter...

Keep it hush is my best advice.

I find sitting on a hammock better than any chair.....I also bring a cut mattrass foam 20x20 (folded) on all my hikes and use it to sit on trees and rocks. Works great.

This thread was one of my inspirations to go with a regular Poly tarp. Between critters, kids and not being careful I would be miserable if I was to puncture or mess up a $150+ tarp.

All of the tarps you posted are as heavy as Poly tarp (fine 6 ounces lighter). Chinook has strap issues as well and others are 4-5 times the price.

Not if it's breathable...Bivy would be used in unexpected/cold situations. I've heard or people using this method with 20 degree bag and no quilts in the winter!
